HOUSTON -- When brothers B.J. and Justin Upton homered in the same game three times in the first month they played together in Atlanta last year it looked as if their concurrent power displays might be a trend for the Braves. Instead B.J. was soon mired in the worst season of his career and the brothers didnt homer in the same game the rest of the year. They finally picked up their fourth such game on Tuesday night to tie a major league record and lead the Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros. "Both of those guys are so talented," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "They can really change the game. Theyre game-changers and hopefully well continue to get more of those." B.J. Uptons homer was a solo shot off Scott Feldman (3-5) in the third inning that put Atlanta up 2-1. Younger brother Justin connected off Feldman the next inning to push the lead to 3-1. "Both of those runs were big for us and it ended up being the deciding factor," Justin said. "Its always special when we homer in the same night, but for it to get us the win, too, it was really nice." Justin said he didnt know about the record until after the game. B.J. knew they were close, but wasnt sure exactly what they needed to tie the mark. "Anytime you can tie a major league baseball record its definitely pretty cool," B.J. said. "Its cool to say you did it, and were not going to try to break it, but hopefully we do." It was a nice bounce-back game for the brothers, who were coming off a four-game series against Washington in which they went a combined 2 for 27. "All of us, really," Gonzalez said when asked about the Uptons rebounding from their struggles in the last series. "Throughout the course of the season youre going to need everybody firing on all cylinders and we havent done that all year, just in spurts. Maybe this will get us going." Aaron Harang (6-6) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth for his 22nd save. Houston rookie George Springer hit his team-leading 14th home run and Jose Altuve added two hits to give him a major league-best 105. Former Astro Chris Johnson had two hits and drove in the first run for the Braves. Springer put Houston up 1-0 with his two-out homer to centre field in the first inning. The Braves tied it in the second when Jason Heyward tripled and scored on a double by Johnson. Jason Castro singled with one out in the Houston fourth, Chris Carter walked and Jonathan Villar hit an RBI single. The Astros got a runner to third base with two outs in both the seventh and eighth innings, but stranded them. Springer grounded out the first time and Robbie Grossman struck out in the eighth. "We had our chances. We just were not able to get the big hit," Houston manager Bo Porter said. "We ran the bases well, we got guys on, but at the end of the day, you have to find a way to drive them in. We were not able to do that (Tuesday), and that was the difference in the ball game." Feldman allowed four hits and three runs with five strikeouts in six innings for his third straight loss. Matt Dominguez, rookie Jon Singleton and Grossman continue to struggle at the plate for Houston. Dominguez was 0 for 3 with a walk to extend his slump to 0 for 19, Singleton went 0 for 4 and is 0 for his last 16 and Grossman is 0 for 24 after going 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. Justin Upton had a nifty defensive play for the second out of the eighth inning. He made a long dash from left field to grab a ball hit by Castro down the line in foul territory before spinning around and throwing the ball in. Hextall was promoted to general manager by the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday to replace Paul Holmgren, who was elevated to president. Hextall is Philadelphias all-time winningest goalie and served as assistant GM last year. "When I was done playing 15 years ago, my next goal was to become a general manager," Hextall said. "Ive been very fortunate to work under Bobby Clarke, Paul Holmgren, and Dean Lombardi out in Los Angeles - three very good people but also three very astute people who I took a lot of lessons from the last 15 years. Holmgren replaced Clarke as GM during the 2006-07 season and led the Flyers to within two games of the Stanley Cup title in 2010. He played for the Flyers from 1975-84 and coached them from 1988-92. "Im excited about whats ahead for me," Holmgren said. The Flyers were eliminated by the New York Rangers in seven games in the first round of the playoffs. They havent won a Cup since 1975, but have reached the Finals and lost six times. Despite heavy criticism in Philadelphia for failing to win it all, the Flyers have long been considered one of the top NHL franchises. Theyve earned a playoff berth in 39 of their 46 seasons. "The culture of winning is nothing to be embarrassed about," said Hextall, adding the Flyers are a "model" organization. "We should all be proud of this organization and what theyve done. Short of winning the Stanley Cup, this organization has done everything. Theres nothing anyone here wont do to win a Stanley Cup." Hextall previously spent seven seasons as vice-president and assistant GM with the Los Angeles Kings. The 50-year-old Hextall played 13 seasons in the NHL and had two stints covering 11 years with the Flyers. He burst on the scene in 1986, won the Vezina Trophy and helped the Flyers get within one win of the Stanley Cup before losing to Wayne Gretzky and thee Edmonton Oilers on the road in Game 7 in 1987.dddddddddddd Hextall was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as MVP of the playoffs that year. Hextall had 296 career wins in the regular season, including 240 for the Flyers. He retired in 1999 and joined the Flyers front office. He spent three years as a pro scout and four as director of pro player personnel before joining the Kings in 2006. "Ron is one of the leagues bright young stars on the management side, and were very fortunate to have him," Flyers chairman Ed Snider said. "Hes had success in Los Angeles and will now put that experience to work for us as general manager. We all remember the enthusiasm, work ethic and personality he had as a player, and were excited to watch him bring those qualities to building a team that will contend for the Stanley Cup." Hextall became the first NHL goalie to score a goal by shooting the puck into the opponents empty net. He also became the first goalie to score a goal in the playoffs. Hextall was known for his fiery temper as a player. His attacked Montreals Chris Chelios during the 1989 playoffs, sparking a brawl. "There is an on-ice guy and an off-ice guy," Holmgren said. "What I see now is an off-ice guy who is very intelligent, very articulate and knows the game inside and out. It has been growing over the last 15 years so hes obviously learned from that." Hextall has a strong core of players, including Hart Trophy finalist Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek and Wayne Simmonds. After years of searching for a true No. 1 goalie, it seems they have one now in Steve Mason. "The thing I really like about our team is everybody talks about our forwards, and thats a good group, but its a young group as well. And thats important," Hextall said. "A lot of these guys are going to get better, and weve got to take it upon ourselves to help them get better every day." ' ' '
