Three Rolex Presidential Date watches with unusual dials are up for auction The Rolex Presidential Date is no stranger to unusual dials, just look at the “Emoji” launched this spring. However, these exotic, ultimate dress watches are often so sought after or unique that owning one can be nearly impossible.
Rolex Day-Date 40 'Meteorite' Ref. 228239 Recently, meteorite dials have appeared more and more frequently in the watch industry, with more and more brands utilizing the space rock with cool stripes. The pattern itself, known as the Weidmann pattern, is formed by the interaction of contrasting iron crystal structures when the meteorite formed. The white gold Rolex Day-Date 40 has been available with a meteorite dial since 2018, but this particular model, dating back to 2019, is one of the earlier models.
The bright meteorite metal surface complements the high gloss of the 40mm case, and the display is held together by diamond hour markers.
Rolex Day-Date 36 'Eisenkiesel' Ref. 12823 While most people will be familiar with meteorites, the Eisenkissel material is less well known. It is also known as acroquartz because it is essentially a crystal with an especially high iron content, giving it its reddish-brown color. It also has a unique grain pattern in a style that is almost reminiscent of Japanese Kintsugi.
The rich brown color of the Eisenkiesel pairs perfectly with the rose gold case and matching President bracelet. To learn more about Rolex bracelets, be sure to check out our complete guide. Beneath the golden exterior, the watch is powered by Caliber 3255 with a 70-hour power reserve.
Rolex Day-Date II “Blue Wave” Ref. 218239 Going back nearly a decade, we saw the 2014 launch of the Rolex Day-Date II Blue Wave. 2014 was actually the last year of production for the Blue Wave Ref. 218239 making it one of the last examples of its kind. It is also one of the largest day-date models Rolex has ever produced, measuring 41 mm in diameter.
And, of course, there are dials. This one is interesting because it's not a stone or mineral, but an elaborate wave pattern. It's created using a variety of techniques, starting with a relatively traditional sunray-brushed blue dial, giving it a shiny metallic tone, and then finishing with waves of black lacquer. The overall impression is impressive.
