FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Outside linebacker OBrien Schofield believes one week of practice will have him ready to play in the Falcons game at New Orleans on Monday night.Schofield, who started 10 games with Atlanta in 2015, re-signed with the Falcons on Thursday to address a sudden depth problem at linebacker.Schofield, a fourth-round pick by Arizona in 2010, played for the Cardinals and Seattle for five seasons before signing with Atlanta last year. He had 28 tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble last season.Atlanta inside linebacker Paul Worrilow had groin surgery on Thursday and will be out indefinitely. Also, rookie outside linebacker DeVondre Campbells status for Monday nights game at New Orleans is uncertain. Campbell, who opened the season as a starter at outside linebacker, missed last weeks win at Oakland with an ankle injury and did not practice on Thursday.Coach Dan Quinn said no timetable has been set for Worrilows return. Philip Wheeler was moved from outside linebacker to play behind starting inside linebacker Deion Jones. Quinn said Worrilows injury and Wheelers move created the need to sign Schofield. We needed to have some more depth on the outside and thats where Schofield has great history being a part of the defense before, Quinn said.Schofield, 29, said his offseason workout schedule left him in good shape to make a quick return to action.I think I did a great job training this offseason, Schofield said. I dont think anybody has worked as hard as I did. Its just going to be getting back into football shape, hitting and running to the ball. Im a veteran. Ive done this for a while so I dont think its going to be that hard.Schofield signed a one-year deal. The details of the contract were not immediately available. He also had interest from other teams, including the Patriots and Jets.I was waiting for the right opportunity as far as the money and the situation, he said. At the end of the day, I took the situation over the money. I still had other offers where I would be getting paid more than I am now, but I looked at this opportunity to come into a system Im comfortable with and a coach Im very comfortable with and I just came here to take advantage of that.Quinn said he will make a decision on Schofields status later in the week. He said Schofield has to quickly adjust to tweaks in the scheme made this year.Hes a real bright guy and will pick it up quick, Quinn said. Were going to see how it goes and then well make a determination for him at the end of the week to see where his conditioning is in football as well. The Falcons also waived running back Terron Ward. Ward had 29 carries for 95 yards and one touchdown in 2015 and did not have a carry in the teams first two games. The move leaves Atlanta with only two running backs, Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, plus fullback Patrick DiMarco. The Falcons may sign another running back after this week.Game notes WR Julio Jones (thigh) also was held out Thursday. Quinn said Jones is making good progress and hopes he will be ready for Monday nights game. ... Rookie SS Keanu Neal (knee) had limited participation after missing the first two games. Greg Inglis has hailed Cameron Smith as a benchmark for NRL excellence after the Melbourne captain calmly led his side to the top of the competition ladder.Smith slotted a 39m post-siren penalty to put Saturday nights round 22 clash with South Sydney into extra time, before cooly slotting a field goal four minutes into golden point to give the Storm a 15-14 win. After Cronullas loss to Canberra earlier in the night, the AAMI Park win pushed the Storm to competition lead with four rounds to play.Having played alongside Smith many times at club, state and international level, Souths skipper Inglis could only tip his hat to the Storm hookers match-winning qualities. He is just the ultimate player, Inglis said.Thats the leader he is and the player he is.He takes his opportunities when he can and, unfortunately for us, he took it out in the golden-point.It was Smiths second game-winning field goal for the season, his first giving the Storm victory against North Queensland in round 10.Cooper (Cronk) had a shot earlier and had a fair bbit of heat on him, Smith said.ddddddddddddHe mentioned to me when we got the ball back on those seven tackles that, if I saw the opportunity, to go out to the left side and have a crack. However Storm coach Craig Bellamy wouldnt let the emotion surrounding the win hide the deficiencies of his sides performance.Im not quite sure why we were flat, Bellamy said.We will have a chat to the players through their review and we might find a couple of things out.But we were pretty disappointed, especially in our execution and certainly in the way we defended tonight, to be quite honest.Melbournes next face in-form Canberra in the nations capital on Monday week. The Raiders are playing the house down at the moment, Bellamy said. Its going to be a real tough ask for us up there. We just need to get back to work this week, improve in a couple of areas and hopefully we can go up there and be competitive with them.
