EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Coach Tom Izzo believes his team learns more from a loss to a ranked opponent than an easy win against a lightweight.Perhaps so, but Michigan State needs to start collecting victories. The No. 13 Spartans lost a buzzer-beater to No. 10 Arizona in the Armed Forces Classic at Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday, then got dismantled by No. 2 Kentucky 69-48 in the Champions Classic at New Yorks Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. The level of opposition drops considerably on Friday when the Spartans (0-2) face winless Mississippi Valley State at the Breslin Center. The Delta Devils have lost their first three games by an average of 34 points.Izzo isnt surprised his team is winless at this stage, considering that freshmen are playing prominent roles.Teams are beating (opponents) by 30 and getting a false feeling of where they are really at, Izzo told media outlets. I told my guys, Youre gonna get exposed. But we look at two-thirds of that (Kentucky) game and say, OK, we played pretty good. We took a couple of punches in the mouth and hung in there.Michigan States defense was not the issue against the Wildcats. It held Kentucky to 38.3 percent shooting but couldnt get into any flow with its half-court offense. The Spartans shot 32.8 percent from the field, made just five of 26 3-point tries, missed six of nine free throws and committed 20 turnovers. Kentucky turned those giveaways into 24 points, while Michigan State scored only four fast-break points. Were a little tired. Were a little worn out, Izzo said of the cross-country travel. Weve got to get back to the drawing board as coaches and do a better job with the execution.Swingman Miles Bridges, the Spartans most highly touted newcomer, had a brutal night in New York. He scored six points on 2-for-11 shooting and committed nine turnovers.Izzo believes Bridges will benefit in the long run from that experience.Miles Bridges is one of the most coachable great players, Izzo told the Detroit News. He still competed, didnt hang his head -- but he did struggle and got his butt kicked. But good players self-evaluate and get better from it, where if he scored 30 points against Sisters of the Poor, it wouldnt have mattered.Bridges is still the only Spartan averaging double figures at 13.5 points per game.Senior guard Eron Harris, the Spartans top returning scorer, needs to rediscover his offensive touch after being a non-factor the first two games. Hes averaging nearly as many turnovers (3.5) as points (4.5).Mississippi Valley State, a Southwestern Athletic Conference club, has offered little resistance in its three losses. The Delta Devils fell to another Big Ten team, Northwestern, in its opener 94-63. They were subsequently blown out by West Virginia 107-66 and Kent State 93-63.Senior guard Marcus Romain is the teams leading scorer at 12.7 points per game. Romain averaged 18.6 points last season. Senior guard Isaac Williams is the only other player averaging double digits at 10.3.Mississippi Valley State lost its first 14 games last season and finished with an 8-27 record. PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks emerged from the All-Star break the same way they went into it -- with a loss.Patrick Corbin lasted only four innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers pounded Arizona pitching for a season-high 18 hits in their 13-7 victory Friday night. The Diamondbacks lost their fifth straight and 13th in the last 15 games.Chris Taylor, acquired by Los Angeles in a trade with Seattle a month ago, fell a single shy of the cycle, and Bud Norris finally beat Arizona.Taylor, a utility infielder recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on June 25, tripled in the fourth, doubled in the fifth and hit a grand slam in the sixth, his first career home run. He was thrown out on a bunt in the eighth.Norris (5-7) entered 0-7 with a 13.92 ERA against the Diamondbacks but ended the drought with the help of the Dodgers offensive outburst. The right-hander went five innings, allowing five runs, four earned, and eight hits. Its a tough place to pitch, he said. I personally have struggled here a few times, so I just wanted to go as deep as I could, kind of just leave all my pitches out there.Corbin (4-8) gave up seven runs, six earned, and seven hits. He struck out seven but walked three. It is just frustrating, he said. It is not the way I liked it to turn out. I just have to move past it and get better.Corbin said his biggest problem is not getting ahead of hitters like I have in the past.It is leading to walks and hitters counts, he said. It is something I need to get better on.The Diamondbacks took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the third, two on Michael Bourns triple, but as has been the case so often this season, gave it up in the very next inning. It is very tough mentally, Arizona manager Chip Hale said. It is one of the things we talked about over the break and talked to the players about today and yesterday. I thought we did a nice job of continuing to play. Our guys battled. The Dodgers scored five in the fourth, with two scoring on Taylors triple. Yasiel Puig singled in two more before being thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.Los Angelees loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth.dddddddddddd Silvino Bracho struck out the next two, but Taylor hit one into the seats beyond left field and the Dodgers led 12-4.In the eighth, needing only a single, Taylor chose to lay down a bunt and was thrown out by the pitcher.I thought it was a good time, the situation, he said. They had the third baseman back and its always been a part of my game, regardless of the hits (I had). I think you put me in that situation again Im still going to try it. Its something I take pride in.Third baseman Jake Lambs two errors in the third led to an unearned Los Angeles run.The Diamondbacks fell to 15-33 at home.KERSHAW CLOSERDodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is inching closer to a return.Kershaw, sidelined since June 27 with a mild disk herniation, will throw a simulated game in Los Angeles on Saturday. Manager Dave Roberts said Kershaw will throw 60 pitches. Before he was hurt, Kershaw, as usual, was one of the games best pitchers, going 11-2 with a 1.79 ERA.TRAINERS ROOMDodgers: Roberts said a bone scan Friday of OF Andre Ethiers right tibia showed the fracture has not completely healed but its healed enough that Andre, to his tolerance, can continue to progress with baseball activity. Roberts said the Dodgers will ramp him up and see where it takes us. ... LHP Alex Wood (posterior elbow) will pitch in the same simulated game as Kershaw.Diamondbacks: RHP Zack Greinke (strained oblique) played catch Thursday night, the first time hes done so since the injury.UP NEXTDodgers: RHP Brandon McCarthy (2-0, 2.70 ERA) makes his third start since coming back from Tommy John surgery, facing his former team for the first time.Diamondbacks: RHP Archie Bradley (3-5, 4.64), coming off a strong but losing effort against San Francisco, makes the start for Arizona in the second game of the three-game series.
